When it comes to the best treatment options for beating cancer, look no further than the experts at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center.

That’s exactly what Michelle Livingston of Woodhaven, Mich., did when she found a nodule on her thyroid gland. Since she had traditional thyroid surgery several years earlier on the opposite side resulting in an incision along the neckline, Ms. Livingston decided to contact Karmanos to see what other options were available. An active career woman, wife and mother, and an avid dancer, Ms. Livingston is proactive about her health and wanted to do whatever she could to remain cancer-free.

Ms. Livingston met with Ho-Sheng Lin, M.D., F.A.C.S., leader of the Head and Neck Oncology Multidisciplinary Team at Karmanos and learned that she was a candidate for a minimally-invasive robotic surgical procedure that would remove her remaining thyroid gland through an incision under the arm. Dr. Lin was the first surgeon in Michigan to use the da Vinci® Surgical System to perform minimally-invasive surgeries on head and neck cancer patients at Karmanos. The Karmanos Cancer Center is one of a limited number of hospitals doing minimally-invasive thyroidectomy surgery in the country.

Watch as WDIV Local 4 Health Correspondent Dr. Frank McGeorge interviews Ms Livingston and Dr. Lin about this procedure.
