Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Troy recently held “An Evening in the Mediterranean” wine tasting and strolling dinner that benefited the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.
“It is one of 41 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States,” said Reverend Father Stratton Dorozenski, Parish Protopresbyter. “We are blessed to have the Institute in our community and its care and healing offered to many individuals.”
Approximately $60,000 was raised in support of Karmanos Cancer Institute and Danialle Karmanos’ Work It Out. It was the first fundraising event of its kind at the church in appreciation of the two organizations.
Serving as Honorary Co-Chair was Tom Kalas, who received a bone marrow transplant at the Karmanos Cancer Center in 2008 to treat an aggressive form of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). As a life-long member of St. Nicholas and a member of the Karmanos Cancer Center Board of Directors, he told guests about the excellent care and compassion provided by his Karmanos team of physicians and other health care professionals.
Also in attendance was Karmanos President and CEO Gerold Bepler, M.D., Ph.D., who offered his appreciation to Father Stratton, Kalas, Danialle and Peter Karmanos, Jr., and the entire St. Nicholas Church Community. “Our scientists are making incredible strides in the fight against cancer every day. Your generous support makes an enormous difference to the lives of our patients.”
