The Children’s Leukemia Foundation of Michigan recently honored a Karmanos Cancer Center physician for his work and compassion in combating the disease.
Charles A. Schiffer, M.D., who leads Karmanos’ Malignant Hematology Multidisciplinary Team, received the foundation’s 2013 Pioneers in Medicine Award during the organization’s sixth annual Crush Michigan Wine and Food Classic at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham on Sept. 21.
The award recognizes medical professionals for their effort in the areas of hematology and oncology and their compassion for those battling leukemia, lymphoma or a related blood disorder. Dr. Schiffer also is a professor of Internal Medicine and Oncology for the Wayne State University School of Medicine.
“I have been involved in the research and care of leukemia patients for approximately 40 years and have been privileged to observe and participate in some of the improvements in outcome which have occurred during these years,” Dr. Schiffer said. “I am very proud to have been recognized by the Children's Leukemia Foundation for these efforts.”
In 2010, he received the prestigious Statesman Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology. That award recognizes the extraordinary dedication of ASCO members for their voluntary efforts that benefit the society, the specialty of oncology, and, most importantly, the patients served. The award is given to volunteers who have given 20 or more cumulative years of service to the organization.
Dr. Schiffer has chaired numerous committees and symposiums that further the work of the society. He frequently has been requested to speak and share his expertise related to hematologic malignancy research, acute myeloid leukemia and lymphoma. He has written and co-written more than 300 articles and 80 book chapters on topics concerning the treatment of leukemia in adults, platelet transfusion and granulocyte transfusion therapy.
He has served on the editorial boards for Blood, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, International Journal of Hematology and reviews articles for multiple journals. Dr. Schiffer is frequently named to Castle Connelly’s list of “Top Doctors,” “Best Doctors in America®” and Hour Detroit Magazine’s “Top Docs.” His committee memberships have included chair of the Leukemia Committee of the Cancer and Leukemia Group B, chair of the Food and Drug Administration Oncologic Drug Advisory Committee, Medical Oncology Subspecialty Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine and grant reviews for the National Cancer Institute and Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of America.
His work has been recognized by the College Teaching Award and the Best Teacher in Hematology - Fellow’s Award. In 2006, he received the Dr. John J. Kenny Award from the LLS and the Celgene Award for Career Achievement in hematology. He was inducted in 2009 into the Academy of Scholars of Wayne State University, the highest recognition accorded academic faculty at the university.
