Prostate cancer patient honored at Health Awareness Day

Dr. Elisabeth Heath with Gerald Blaskay

Each summer for the past few years, Elisabeth Heath, M.D., FACP, director, Prostate Cancer Research, and Laura Zubeck, RN, BSN, MBA, director, Patient/Community Education & Volunteer Services, both of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, have spent the better part of a Saturday at Wolverine Harley-Davidson in Clinton Township. They go, not because they are HOG riders, they go for Gerald Blaskay.

Mr. Blaskay, who died in May, was a husband, father, grandfather, U.S. Navy Veteran, proud member of the Wolverine HOG Chapter #1332, and a fierce advocate for prostate cancer prevention and screening. He was the driving force behind the annual Health Awareness Day that will be held this year on Saturday, June 21 at Wolverine Harley-Davidson.

“Mr. Blaskay is one of our fallen heroes,” said Zubeck. “His enthusiasm and dedication directed the efforts of Dr. Heath in provide lifesaving information regarding prostate cancer prevention, screening, treatment and education to his HOG family at Wolverine.”

Mr. Blaskay’s advocacy will be honored at this year’s Health Awareness Day to be held from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Several Karmanos prostate cancer experts will be on hand to answer questions and provide screening information. Thanks to Dr. Heath, Shirish Gadgeel, M.D., Ho-Sheng Lin, M.D., Jordan Maier, M.D., and Catherine Nichols, DNP, for donating time to be part of this cancer prevention and awareness event.
