Karmanos Cancer Institute’s pancreatic cancer research gains support from Monroe-area golf outing

The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute is the beneficiary of the 18 Aces to Conquer Cancer golf fundraising event, which was recently hosted by the Monroe Dodge Chrysler Jeep Superstore at the Monroe Golf and Country Club. More than $10,000 was generated by the event and will go towards pancreatic cancer research conducted at Karmanos. The event was held in memory of Bob Mayberry, Todd Hafner, and Lillian Webb.

The fundraiser attracted about 100 golfers and featured a morning and afternoon round, along with lunch and dinner. Participants who hit a hole in one got the chance to win a new Jeep, though no one was able to achieve it. The event organizers, however, are hopeful for a winner next year!

Mara Jelich, executive director of Radiation Oncology at Karmanos, participated in the golf event.

“Volunteering in the tournament was yet another way for us to give to the Monroe community,” she said. “Monroe Cancer Center is a very special treatment facility that serves the downriver community and the vibe of appreciation for what our doctors do there was clear at the tournament.”

In addition to its main location in midtown Detroit, Karmanos provides radiation oncology services at the Monroe Cancer Center, a joint venture between Karmanos, Mercy Memorial Hospital System in Monroe and ProMedica Health System of Toledo.

We thank the golf event attendees and Monroe Dodge Chrysler Jeep Superstore for their generosity, and look forward to another great event in 2014!
