Karmanos Clinical Trial Offers Hope and New Treatment for Young Mom from Indiana

For many, the holidays are a joyous time with holiday trimmings, presents and great anticipation for what the New Year will bring. For some, including cancer patients and their loved ones, it’s appreciating the everyday miracles and being able to share more time with loved ones that is the greatest gift – not just at the holidays but every day.

That’s the case for Karmanos patient Stephanie Strickland who drives four hours one way from her home in Warsaw, Indiana, just west of Fort Wayne, to participate in a clinical trial offering the latest drug treatment for her specific cancer.

Stephanie was diagnosed with stage four small cell lung cancer in 2010 at the age of 40. She had never smoked and had no family history of the disease. She said she really didn’t have any symptoms that gave her any indication that there was something was wrong, that is until she had a seizure while with her young son at his soccer game. Tests confirmed the shocking news; she had stage four lung cancer.

After traditional treatments were no longer effective, Stephanie searched for a clinical trial which led her to the Karmanos Cancer Center and Shirish Gadgeel, M.D., leader of the Thoracic Multidisciplinary Team at Karmanos.

WJBK FOX 2’s Deena Centofanti captured Stephanie’s story – her determination to live and share more celebrations with her family, and highlighting the importance of clinical trials and cancer research to advance new, life-saving treatments.
