Spotlight/Description:

Anthony Shields is involved in research projects funded by the National Cancer Institute and the Department of Defense studying new tracers for use with Positron Emission Tomography (PET) to assess tumors. He also conducts research on new treatments for gastrointestinal tumors including colorectal, pancreatic, and gastric cancers. The Associate Director for Clinical Research and Program Leader of Development Therapeutics for the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, Michigan, Shields is also Chief of the Gastrointestinal Oncology Section and Leader, Gastrointestinal Oncology Multidisciplinary Team. Senior Editor for Molecular Imaging and Biology and the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, Shields is also a reviewer for a number of journals, including Blood, Nature Medicine, and The Journal of Clinical Oncology. He has authored over 70 peer-reviewed articles and more than 20 book chapters, reviews and case reports on cancer research. Shields received B.S. degrees in Biology and Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts) in 1974. In 1979 he received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School (Boston, Massachusetts) and his Ph.D. in Cell Biology at MIT. He completed his Internal Medicine residency (1981) and a Senior Fellowship (1983) in Oncology at the University of Washington School of Medicine (Seattle, Washington).
