21st annual Susan G. Komen
Detroit Race for the Cure
Saturday, May 26, 2012

Invite out-of-town guests and make a long, holiday weekend of it. Enjoy all that our community has to offer! Note that our Race date must conform to the Detroit Tigers' schedule. If your Memorial Day weekend traditions keep you away, please consider a tax-deductible donation equal to your Race fee or register and wear your shirt at the cottage. Take pictures and send them to us at raceforthecure@karmanos.org.

Watch our video and you won’t want to miss our 2012 Race! Thank you, Kelly Dzierzawski, MadCap Productions and Michigan Association of CPAs.

Every year, more than 40,000 women will die from breast cancer in the U.S. alone. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the friends and families who suffer this terrible loss. In their memory, we redouble our energies in the battle to end breast cancer forever.

Images of friends we have lost to breast cancer appear here. If you have a photo you would like us to add, please send it with identifying information to raceforthecure@karmanos.org (electronic images only, please).

KOMEN INVESTMENTS IN SCIENCE AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

Komen for the Cure Research Grants
Komen is the world’s largest private funder of breast cancer research, having invested $685 million since 1982 and playing a role in funding every major advance in breast cancer science over the past 30 years.

In 2012, 40% of Komen’s research funding was invested in projects that seek to understand the underlying origins of breast cancer and why it has the capacity to spread throughout the body.

Our total research investment has averaged between 21 to 29% of Komen’s budget annually for the last six years. The focus on translational research since 2007 is designed to find answers to the most pressing questions in breast cancer today - metastatic and aggressive disease, prevention and environment, and better screening technologies. We are not revisiting basic science; we are funding research that will get answers out of the labs and into the hands of doctors and patients as quickly as possible. In just three and a half years, our $84 million investment in our large-scale Promise Grants is already leading to seven clinical trials with a total of 20 planned. These are significant and swift results.
