Overview

Breast cancer is a complex topic, and loaded with emotional impact. Armed with good information, we are in a better position to maintain good health and to deal more effectively with a diagnosis, should that occur. Current technology makes information more widely available than ever before. The following organizations are trustworthy sources of breast cancer information.

Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute

Caring for more than 6,000 new patients annually and conducting more than 700 cancer-specific scientific investigation programs and clinical trials, the Karmanos Cancer Institute is among the nation’s best cancer centers. Through the commitment of 1,000 staff, including nearly 300 faculty members, and supported by thousands of volunteers and financial donors, the Institute strives to prevent, detect and eradicate all forms of cancer.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure

www.komen.org

Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure®, we have invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world. The Komen Race for the Cure® series, the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, includes over 100 Races in the U.S. and five international Races. This year, over 1 million participants are expected to take part in this signature awareness and fundraising event. A global leader in the fight against breast cancer, Susan G. Komen for the Cure fulfills its mission through support of innovative breast cancer research grants, meritorious awards, educational and scientific conferences, and community-based outreach programs around the world.
