Registration for the 20th
Annual Komen Detroit Race for the Cure® is
OPEN! That's right - registration
officially opened October 20th, and four teams
registered the first day! We now have over
50 teams registered for the 2011 Komen Detroit Race for
the Cure®.
It's never too early. We strongly
encourage you to set up a team now, register yourself as
the first team member, and begin recruiting team members
and raising funds to help end breast cancer forever.
Were
you a team captain for the 2010 Race? You can proudly
tell your friends you've played a key role in Komen
Detroit's amazing record of raising more than $19.3
million since Detroit's inaugural Komen Race in 1992.
Together, we've made a significant impact on the breast
health of metro Detroit and helped fund research
discoveries in Michigan and around the world. Please
click here for additional information on
grant funding by Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.
May 21,
2011 will be another WONDERFUL DAY-- one of the best
parties in our community, celebrating the memory of
those we have lost, the survivorship of 2.5 million in
America and the tremendous progress that has been
made.
 Don't wait. Keep the
enthusiasm alive and register now!
Congratulations to Wayne Cares
Athletics, who already boasts 16 members on
their team!
TEAM
CAPTAIN REMINDER: All
team captains MUST be registered
participants. Remember to register
yourself as a team
member. |

| GRANTS |
As always, 75% of our
net proceeds stay in our community (Wayne, Oakland and Macomb
counties).
Extend
and Enhance: Providing BCCCP Services to More Women in Wayne
County/ $916,536 Robert Burack, MD,
Wayne State University / Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Institute The Wayne County Breast and Cervical
Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) provides breast screening,
follow up and treatment at no out-of-pocket cost to uninsured
women in the Detroit region. This grant will "extend" the
BCCCP by adding 1,350 screenings to the 6,650 funded by MDCH
and will "enhance" the program by covering its unfortunate
gaps-- MDCH does not provide coverage for breast biopsy
facility fees (women face these bills) nor for breast cancer
treatment among women denied Medicaid.
ACCESS Breast Cancer Outreach
Project/ $125,000 Adnan Hammad,
Ph.D. - ACCESS Community Health Research
Center Arab Community Center for Economic and
Social Services (ACCESS) will continue the Breast Cancer
Outreach Project engaging in an extensive breast cancer
education, outreach, and screening program in the low-income
Arab American community. Fifteen hundred women will receive
comprehensive one-on-one health education through in-home
visits, and 1,000 women with no previous history of breast
screening will receive a free mammogram and clinical breast
exam.
Breast
Diagnostic and Limited Services Treatment to Low
Income/Uninsured Patients at the Alexander J. Walt Breast
Center / $501,571 Laura Zubeck, RN,
BSN, MBA - Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Institute The Karmanos Cancer Institute's
Alexander J. Walt Breast Center grant will cover diagnostic
and limited treatment for un-/underinsured women and men who
are not eligible for other community support due to program
restrictions. The grant will also cover service gaps for some
patients enrolled in the Wayne County BCCCP. Karmanos staff
will evaluate all requests for financial assistance; provide
Komen for the Cure® educational material, system navigation,
follow-up guidance, and help with transportation and
prescription needs. For the last 17 years, Komen funding has
provided a way for Karmanos to reduce barriers of
socio-economics, language and access in providing breast care
to at-risk and minority populations in metropolitan Detroit
and the tri-county area.
Sister & Sister Program /
$16,000 Teresa Rodges, MSA Pontiac
Osteopathic Hospital Riley Foundation Through
church-based health and education programs, the Sister &
Sister Program will expand outreach efforts to increase
mammogram screening and survival rates among hard-to-reach
uninsured and underinsured African-American women. Survivors
will teach other African-American women about the importance
of early detection by "witnessing" or talking about their
cancer experiences. Each church's Health Outreach Ministry
Leader will be trained to carry the message to more than 300
African-American women. More than 100 women will receive
access to free mammogram screenings at the POH Regional
Medical Center.

| FUNDRAISING
FORUM |
Times are tough. So
is breast cancer. And our Komen Detroit Team Captains have
proven to be the toughest of all.
Fundraising is key to
ending breast cancer. With online tools provided through
your fundraising page and/or by planning benefit events,
fundraising is both fun and easy. Most importantly, you and
your team will make a real impact on breast
cancer.
Each Team Captain Newsletter will
highlight an upcoming fundraising event. But we
won't know unless you tell us. Please submit any fundraising
events you'd like to share with others by e-mailing Sandy
at sjessop@att.net. Tami Fink, breast cancer
survivor who is currently fighting her battle and is team
captain for Tami's Team, is already ahead of the game.
She recently held an event at Leon & Lulu's, raising
nearly $3,000. |
| A
NOTE FROM THE TEAMS CHAIRS |
|

To our New and Returning Team
Captains,
Welcome - and welcome back.
We missed you and we're preparing for the 20th year of this
inspiring event.
What makes it so inspiring? YOU! We've
all watched Komen Detroit teams grow in numbers and impact. In
just the past five years, the number of teams has multiplied
over 400%, reaching nearly 600 teams in 2010.
Thank you
- for continuing your work to bring our vision to a reality.
For helping us keep the promise Nancy Brinker made to her
sister, Suzy. We WILL
have a world without breast cancer, thanks to
your commitment.
We will be focusing on the 20th
Anniversary in the coming months. Look for special ideas and
challenges. At least 20 of them!
We hope to see you at
our Team Captain Workshops in early 2011. Until then, don't be
strangers. Let us know how you're doing, and what we can do to
help you do what you do so well! Jan
