TEAM CAPTAIN WORKSHOPS

The first two workshops brought over 35 people. New team captains learned valuable start-up information and veterans got a refresher. We shared the latest news from Susan G. Komen for the CureŽ. Everyone was energized by 2010's success and left with new ideas for team building and fundraising. Panera Bread continues to Panera Bread Catering Logoprovide wonderful coffee and desserts at each workshop.

The next Team Captain Workshop is Wednesday, March 16th, with another one in April. Please consider joining us.

All workshops will be held at the Komen Detroit office, located at:

HELP! GET YOUR TEAM MEMBERS REGISTERED!

Need ideas on how to get your team members registered? It can be just as easy as sending an e-mail.

Here's an e-mail that's proven successful. You can copy, paste and change information as needed.

Dear Friends and Family,

2011 is here - and we've already started preparing for this year's 20th Annual Komen Detroit Race for the CureŽ at

Comerica Park.

Many of you have been teammates before. Some of you may be considering this walk for the first time. Either way, the day doesn't change. It's simply "the best day in the City of Detroit!"

Join together with team members to walk in support of each

other. We support survivors. We support co-survivors. We

remember those who do not survive.

This is an easy 3-mile walk (or run if you prefer) down

Woodward Avenue with 30,000 of your closest friends. You'll be entertained by 20 bands and meet others who share a common interest - to end breast cancer forever.

Don't wait another minute. Log on to Komen Detroit's

Website and complete your registration. Bring your family

and friends - everyone is welcome on [TEAM NAME]!

Not able to walk? You can STILL save lives. Please consider

a donation of any size when you visit Komen Detroit's Fundraising page.

Thank you!

FUNDRAISING FORUM

Congratulations to many of you who are hard at work getting your fundraising projects started. The easiest way to raise funds is a simple e-mail.

Sample E-mail

To my Dear Friends and Family,

Some say this is the month of love - February holds warm Valentines celebrations. We think of all our special friends and remember how much we love them.

One way to show your love in a meaningful way is to actually give the gift of life.

We all know someone who has been touched by the heartache of breast cancer, and I am committed to being part of the cure. You can, too. It's so easy and makes the perfect gift. Please consider donating to the Komen Detroit Race for the CureŽ in honor of a loved one. The money will be put to great use.  Last year over $1.55 million was disbursed in local grants benefiting women and men in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties and $428,300 helped to fund Komen's global reasearch.

On May 21st, I will be walking in the 20th Annual Komen Detroit Race for the CureŽ. This year I am committed to raise [$2500] for the cause.

I hope you understand why this is so important to me. Donating in honor of your loved one(s) will be the best gift you ever give.  It's easy - just follow the link below to my personal fundraising webpage at http://www.active.com/donate/detroitRFTC12/[your.donation.page]. It's safe, secure and quick! Any amount is so appreciated.

Thank you for your love and support of our community.

Happy Valentine's Day!
[YOUR NAME]

P.S. Don't forget to ask your employer if they provide matching gifts for your donation.

P.P.S. If you can join the team, please do so! Fundraising is optional but so appreciated.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE TEAMS COMMITTEE

Vicky GalperLast month we introduced you to committee member, Bob Fontichiaro (better known as "Bob, the Answer Man").  We hope you enjoyed getting to know Bob better.

This month's spotlight: Vicky Galper

Vicky Galper was born and raised in the metro Detroit area. She grew up in Redford Twp and has lived in Farmington Hills for the past 15 years. Vicky says, "The best thing about my life is the life-long friendships my husband and I have made in this community." Vicky has been happily married to Jeff Galper for 22 years and they have two beautiful daughters: Lauren and Dayna. Lauren, a student at Eastern Michigan University, is studying to be a teacher; and Dayna, a freshman at Central Michigan University, would like to go on to law school.

Vicky has been in the insurance industry for 33 years and is Vice President of the Metro Detroit Insurance Association.

Her first connection to the race was in 1998 when she decided to run a 5K before turning 40. She thought this race was a very worthy cause, so she and her friend Debbie raised almost $1,000. In 2004 she joined her best friend's team. She has been happily involved since then, and officially joined the Teams Committee in 2010.

20th ANNUAL SPECIAL EVENTS AND OFFERS

Race Lapel Pins 2011 Komen Detroit Lapel Pin

This year, in honor of the 20th Annual Komen Detroit Race, team captains are offered a special incentive. While complimentary pins are given to registered survivors, these special 20th annual pins are also sold for $3.00 each or 2 for $5.00.

However, as a 20th Annual Race special, team captains can purchase these pins at the special price of 20 for $20. The pins will be for sale at Team Pack-up and Team Pick-up; or feel free to contact the office to purchase them in advance.

Wondering what you can do with 20 (or more) pins?

  • Sell them as a fundraiser - that's a profit of $2.00 per pin.
  • Offer them as early registration incentives.
  • Give them as a gift to your team members.

Fundraising Incentive

Another 20th Annual Komen Detroit Race special is being offered in February only. It's a fundraising special: Raise $2000 by February 20th, 2011, and receive two free registration entries.

Wondering what you can do with these free entries?

  • Offer them as a fundraising incentive.
  • Help out a prospective team member/family.
  • Use them as prizes at a fundraising event.

MORE THAN $1.9 BILLION INVESTED!

As Susan G. Komen for the CureŽ continues to invest in discovering and delivering the cures for breast cancer, we are happy to announce that our total mission investment since inception has reached more than $1.9 billion! This is evidence that we are keeping our promise to end breast cancer forever. That number represents our total investment in research and in community programs focused on education, screening and treatment for our Komen family members in need.

A NOTE FROM THE TEAMS CHAIRS

We at Komen Detroit Race for the CureŽ are so genuinely grateful for our wonderful Race sponsors. We could not do what we do without their support.

Sandy drives a Ford and often eats at Panera Bread. What kind of yogurt do we eat? Why, Yoplait, of course! And we work out in New Balance shoes.

These are great sponsor-related products that we can all proudly support.
