TEAM CAPTAIN WORKSHOPS

New team captains can count on learning valuable information and getting some cool ideas. Veteran captains are sure to feel re-energized while sharing tips and tricks with new team captains.

So, we encourage you to take advantage of the Team Captain Workshops, and get information on team building and fundraising. We'll share the latest news from Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Then, you'll share strategies that work for you.

All workshops will be held at the Komen Detroit office, located at:

Karmanos Cancer Center

24601 Northwestern Highway
Southfield, MI 48075

Click here for a map of the location.

Workshop #1: January 24, 2011 (6:30-8:30 p.m.)

Workshop #2: February 8, 2011 (6:30-8:30 p.m.)

FUNDRAISING FORUM

If you're looking for fundraising ideas, you won't have to look far. Just check out the fundraising section of the Team Captain's Kit and visit "Golden Fundraising Ideas" -developed by team captains who have shared a variety of successful fundraisers.

Do you know the easiest and most successful fundraiser of all?

JUST ASK!!!

Email is the easiest way to stimulate donations. Most people are happy to help - they are just waiting to be asked. Every little bit helps. It all adds up to one thing - finding a cure to end breast cancer forever!

Would you like YOUR fundraising event to appear here? Just send us the information and we'll try to add it to the next newsletter!

SPOTLIGHT ON THE TEAMS COMMITTEE

This year the Teams Committee adds a few more hearts and hands to the group. Our members are:

  • Ann Cramer
  • Bob Fontichiaro (better known as "The Answer Man")
  • Vicky Galper
  • Deb Pank

Each month will feature one member so you can get to know them all. Think of this section as a virtual "coffee hour."

This month's spotlight: Bob FontichiaroBob Fontichiaro

Bob Fonticharo lives in Troy, Michigan, with his wife, Chris. Having just celebrated their 16th anniversary, Bob and Chris are blessed with a blended family of four surviving adult children - three live in Michigan and one resides in sunny California. The family also includes five grandchildren (2 boys and 3 girls) with two living locally in Farmington Hills and three in California.

Bob is a retired educator, with a career spanning from teacher to elementary school principal to district administrator.  Subsequent to retirement, Bob worked as an independent educational consultant  for several years.

Now Bob's primary interests focus around home-related endeavors, having just completed a year-long  project finishing his home's lower level - just in time for the holidays! He and Chris enjoy traveling, such as their recent trip to Italy in August to visit family, eating out (he loves bar burgers); and finding warm weather when Michigan is cold.

Bob became involved with the Komen Detroit Race for the Cure® as a result of Chris and her personal fight with breast  cancer, as well as her commitment and volunteer work with the Race.

"I have served in many roles, including setup/take down for numerous events, Race Day logistics, Early Bird Packup, New Captain Telephone Orientation, "Race Answer Man", and various other tasks where needed.  But I'm probably best known for my dishwashing skills at the annual Platinum Recognition Dinner."

Bob is truly a one-of-a-kind asset on the Teams Committee!

LOOKING FOR SPONSORS

Komen Detroit has sponsorship opportunities that fit every organization and every budget. Sponsors help us win the important race against breast cancer, tap into the #1 health concern of women, reach thousands of people on one day and experience the satisfaction of contributing to an important cause.

If you know of anyone who may be interested in sponsorship opportunities, please contact Katrina Studvent at studvenk@karmanos.org or give her a call at 248-304-2083.

KOMEN MISSION NEWS

Pregnancy Doesn't Appear to Worsen Breast Cancer Outcomes

According to the results of a study conducted at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, women who are diagnosed with breast cancer and treated with chemotherapy while pregnant have a better disease-free survival (survival without a cancer recurrence or a new cancer) than women who are not pregnant at the time of diagnosis. Overall survival was similar in the two groups of patients. These results were presented at the 2010 Breast Cancer Symposium.

Previous reports have suggested that being pregnant at the time of diagnosis worsens breast cancer outcomes. This may have been due to older approaches to cancer treatment, in which pregnant women received less effective cancer treatment than non-pregnant women or delayed cancer treatment until after the birth of the baby. A NOTE FROM THE TEAMS CHAIRS
We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new friends at our Team Captain WTeam Captainsorkshops. But we don't want it to stop there! Visit the Komen Detroit website and read the email blasts sent out by the office. Please feel free to contact us from time to time and let us know how you're doing or what questions you have. Remember - you keep us energized, too!
