"Update: 101 Ways to Give Back to the Karmanos Cancer Institute"

In January, Jeff Watters, exercise enthusiast, embarked on a creative fundraiser for the Karmanos Cancer Institute called 101 Ways to Give Back, inspired by HOUR Detroit magazine’s August 2005 article 101 Things Every Detroiter Must Do. Through his business, Watters Performance Enhancement, Jeff is challenging his clients and community members to a year-long quest to accomplish all 101 activities on the HOUR list while raising funds for the Institute.
So far the response has been tremendous. With the help of clients, local area businesses and other supporters, Jeff has already raised over $23,000 for the Institute. In April, supporters attended a regular season Detroit Pistons basketball game at the Palace of Auburn Hills (checking off #11 on the list).
“A donor proposed an interesting challenge for the Pistons game. If I could convince the Palace to let me take a free throw during an intermission, and I made it, the donor would double her pledge,” said Jeff.
Even though he missed the basket, the donor generously doubled her initial pledge amount. Click here to see video of Jeff attempting the charity free throw.
Well on his way to achieving the goal of $101,000 for the Institute, Jeff predicts the pleasant weather and various outdoor activities in the upcoming months will increase participation.
“Adventure Saturday” is May 27. This action-packed adventure begins with an 8:30 a.m. workout on the Detroit riverfront. From there, the group will browse Eastern Market, visit the Rocky Peanut Co. and eat breakfast at Russell Street Deli – completing numbers 2, 58, 59 and 66 on the list.
The Karmanos Cancer Institute thanks Jeff and all the participants for their continued hard work and dedication. For more information, or to get involved, visit the 101 Ways to Give Back website.
