Karmanos Researcher Appointed as NIH Study Section Chairperson

Posted Date: 10/4/2007

Terrance Albrecht, Ph.D.

Terrance Albrecht, Ph.D., program leader for the Communication and Behavioral Oncology program at the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, Michigan, has been appointed as chairperson of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Community Influences on Health Behavior Study Section, Center for Scientific Review, through June 30, 2009.

According to the NIH, members for study sections are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals and other achievements and honors. The Community Influences on Health Behavior Study Section meets three times a year for two days to review grants submitted for NIH funding. The section reviews between 80 and 100 grants each time it convenes. As chairperson, Dr. Albrecht will facilitate the review process, ensuring each grant receives equal thought and attention.

“I’m honored to have this opportunity,” said Dr. Albrecht. “I will have the chance to understand what is happening at the national level with behavioral medicine and cancer research. It’s a stimulating scientific environment, and I’m looking forward to having an influence on the process.”

As the leader of the Communication and Behavioral Oncology program at Karmanos, Dr. Albrecht seeks to understand the role of verbal and non-verbal communication between cancer patients and their physicians. This understanding is particularly important to address the health needs of minority groups. Minority groups often bear the brunt of cancer’s impact due to relatively high risk levels, poor prognoses and limited access to support mechanisms.

“This appointment speaks to the quality of Dr. Albrecht’s research and the impact she’s made in her field,” said John C. Ruckdeschel, president and C.E.O., Karmanos Cancer Institute. “I’m proud she’s part of the Karmanos team.”

Dr. Albrecht is the principal investigator of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) sponsored grant for the Detroit Community Network Program (CNP) grant. The goal of the Community Network Program is to promote and sustain a strong, community-based group that will improve access to cancer screening, early stage detection, diagnosis and treatment for the older, underserved African American population in Detroit. A key upcoming CNP-sponsored program, “Fighting Cancer with Faith, Hope and Knowledge: Tools and Strategies for Faith Leaders” will be held on Thursday October 25, 2007, from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. This event will provide important information about breast and prostate cancers, the importance of early detection, and how to best assist older members of area congregations (of all faiths) with new diagnoses.

Please join the Karmanos Cancer Institute family in congratulating Dr. Albrecht.
