Breast cancer symposium planned for Feb. 27

On Saturday, Feb. 27, the Breast Cancer Symposium with highlights from the 2009 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium will be held at the Dearborn Inn from 8 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. This conference is geared towards physicians, fellows, residents, physician assistants and nurse practitioners in the field of oncology.

The symposium is sponsored by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, Wayne State University School of Medicine and Michigan Society of Hematology and Oncology.

Physicians attending are encouraged to bring any cases they may have for discussion.

Experts in the field of breast cancer are scheduled to speak. They include:

  • Harold Burstein, M.D., Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School
  • Lawrence Flaherty, M.D., Karmanos Cancer Institute, Wayne State University
  • Elaina Gartner, M.D., Karmanos Cancer Institute, Wayne State University
  • David Gorski, M.D., Ph.D., Karmanos Cancer Institute, Wayne State University
  • Kathy Miller, M.D., Indiana University
  • Zeina Nahleh, M.D., Karmanos Cancer Institute, Wayne State University
  • Linda Rissman, D.O., Karmanos Cancer Institute, Wayne State University
  • Richard Santen, M.D., University of Virginia

Drs. Burstein, Miller and Santen are keynote speakers for the symposium. Dr. Burstein is discussing adjuvant therapy, Dr. Miller is discussing metastatic breast cancer and targeted therapy, and Dr. Santen is discussing the update on use of aromatase inhibitors for breast cancer. Other topics being discussed include:

  • Axillary dissection in the era of sentinel lymph node biopsy
  • Updates in radiation oncology
  • Updates on the neo-adjuvant treatment of breast cancer

In addition to these topics, audience cases will be presented and discussed.

The Wayne State University School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 5.25 AMA PRA Category I Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

COST: Cost to attend is $90 for physicians (except Karmanos faculty – no charge); $35 for nurses and physician extenders. The conference is free to all fellows, residents and students.
