The Karmanos Cancer Institute at Lawrence and Idell Weisberg Cancer Center in Farmington Hills is committed to providing the best available treatment for patients diagnosed with cancer. We are pleased to announce the opening of expanded services and new facilities at Lawrence and Idell Weisberg Cancer Center in Farmington Hills. All of the clinic changes were designed with aesthetics in mind to create a soothing environment for patients. Taking inspiration from nature, vaulted ceilings and surface finishes appear refined, yet comfortable. The space layout has been designed to create a natural flow. October 2022 will mark the completion of the four-phase expansion project, increasing its footprint from 17,700 to nearly 68,000 square feet, transitioning the tranquil environment into a full-service outpatient oncology center.
New Services
Women's Corridor
One of the largest spaces opening during this phase is a women’s corridor. Designed under the supervision of the Karmanos radiology team, this area creates a convenient, spacious and private area for women who are visiting the clinic for a mammography exam or ultrasound. The corridor features a thoughtful layout that links changing areas, exam rooms and mammography suites to create a comfortable flow for patients during their visits.
Mammography Unit
A key feature of the Women’s Corridor is a new 3D mammography unit with Stereotactic Breast Biopsy capabilities. This enables Karmanos to provide mammographic guided breast biopsy capabilities in Farmington Hills. This second machine also increases the capacity of patients Karmanos can serve and provides the latest technology in digital and 3D mammography for earlier breast cancer detection.
Bone Densitometry Imaging (DEXA)
Previously only available at Karmanos’ flagship location in Detroit, DEXA bone density imaging is an advanced X-ray technology that measures bone mineral density. This procedure is important to cancer patients who may experience bone loss due to their disease. Bone density screening is also important for the general population and for women’s wellness as it helps in the detection of osteoporosis. The addition of this technology to Karmanos’ Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center in Farmington Hills creates convenience for patients who may have previously had to travel to Detroit for these scans.
Interventional Radiology (IR) Suite
The interventional radiology suite will provide patients access to vascular and other procedures needed for supportive services in their cancer treatment, such as placement of infusaports, peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) lines, nephrostomy tubes, gastric tubes and ultrasound-guided drainage procedures. These options were previously only available at Karmanos Cancer Center in Detroit. The minimally invasive vascular procedures can be performed in the suite with on-site, same-day recovery.
Nuclear Medicine - Gamma Camera
The addition of a nuclear gamma camera will provide the nuclear scans patients need throughout their treatment. A full complement of nuclear scans such as bone, multigated acquisition (MUGA), hepatobiliary iminodiacetic acid (HIDA), thyroid, parathyroid and lymphoscintigraphy can now be performed at the Farmington Hills Clinic.
Procedure Space
Colonoscopies, esophagogastroduodenoscopies (EGD) and minor surgical procedures such as skin excisions and some breast biopsies will now be offered at the newly expanded center, thanks to a new procedure space. This will enable patients to receive outpatient care that was previously not available in Farmington Hills.
Expanded Services
Exam Rooms
The phase two completion increased the quantity of exam rooms to 17, which represents about three quarters of the exam rooms that will be completed in total. The remainder will open during the next phase of construction with an expected opening date of March 2022. Not only are these rooms larger, they are also brighter with motivating and uplifting aesthetics, which are present throughout the new facility. They also feature new exam tables, which adjust in all directs for added comfort. These exam spaces were located in temporary annexes during construction, which have now been removed.
Clinic Waiting Area
Patients awaiting services at the Farmington Hills Clinic will now have access to a more spacious and accommodating waiting area. This new section features private check-in pods, new furniture and an open design, which allows for an abundance of natural light.
