Karmanos Cancer Institute has launched a survey to ask community members about their experiences with health care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Questions will focus specifically on cancer prevention, screening and treatment, as well as COVID-19 concerns, social distancing and impacts on diverse communities. The survey will enroll 2,000 participants in Karmanos’ 46-county catchment area. Members of the general adult population, cancer patients and cancer survivors are asked to participate.

What is the purpose of the survey?

Karmanos Cancer Institute at Wayne State University is part of a consortium of cancer centers that is launching a survey to ask community members about their experiences with health care during the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically cancer prevention, screening and treatment.

Who can take the survey?

Anyone who lives in Michigan and is 18 years of age or older.

What types of questions will the survey ask?

The survey asks about your experience with the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing and the changes it has caused in your health care, cancer care, daily living and mood. It will also ask you about your attitudes toward health care and research and experiences of discrimination.

How can I take the survey?

You can take the survey online here or you can call 313-576-8869 to arrange a telephone interview.

Are my answers confidential?

Yes! All of the information you provide will be confidential and stored electronically in an encrypted database. Your name and other identifying information will not be stored or linked to your answers.

How will survey results be used?

The survey responses will be analyzed by our research study team, who will create reports, presentations, and publications based on the data. Specific reports will be provided to our community partner organizations and other social service agencies to give them insight into services the community needs at this time. Data will always be reported for the entire group or subgroups of people who complete the survey. The information of any individual will never be reported.

Will I receive anything for completing the survey?

You will have the option of receiving an electronic Target gift card or a physical gift card to Target or Meijer via U.S. mail.

Who is conducting the survey?

The Principal Investigator is Hayley Thompson, Ph.D., associate center director of Community Outreach and Engagement at Karmanos Cancer Institute and professor, Department of Oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Who is funding the survey?

The National Cancer Institute.
