Karmanos Associate Center Director Chosen for HERS Leadership Institute

Hayley Thompson, Ph.D., associate center director of Community Outreach and Engagement, faculty supervisor of the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, and professor of Oncology at Wayne State University (WSU), was selected to participate in the HERS Leadership Institute’s program for academic leadership development with support from WSU leadership.

The program focuses on values-driven, equity-minded leadership while encouraging practical learning in various topics to support growth and success in higher education.

As the faculty supervisor of COE, Dr. Thompson’s team coordinates many initiatives within the 46 counties it serves within the Karmanos catchment area. These include training community members to educate networks about cancer prevention and screening, teaching community members about the basics of research, convening community members to identify cancer research priorities, and building ongoing relationships between the community and researchers.

Dr. Thompson is also the director of WSU’s Center for Health Equity and Community Knowledge in Urban Populations, or CHECK-UP.

CHECK-UP is a transdisciplinary effort led by Dr. Thompson that works across Detroit communities and WSU’s schools, colleges and departments.
