IN THE NEWS - Seeking Second Opinions: A Lifeline for Cancer Patients

Robert Brooks continued to advocate for himself to find out precisely what the underlying problem was for his sudden health issues. After requesting further testing, he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He wanted to understand all of his options for treatment, so he sought a second opinion with Jeffrey Zonder, M.D., hematologist, leader of the Multiple Myeloma and Amyloidosis Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) and member of the Hematology Oncology MDT at Karmanos. Thanks to Dr. Zonder reviewing Brooks’ case with his team of experts, he had more options for treatment. He decided to participate in a clinical trial and had a stem cell transplant. Brooks is now a six-year survivor. Brooks and Dr. Zonder shared his story, and how easy it is to get a second opinion at Karmanos within a week.
