Smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) is believed to be a precancer that can develop into multiple myeloma. Andrew Kin, M.D., hematologist and medical oncologist, and member of the Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant, Hematology Oncology and Multiple Myeloma and Amyloidosis Multidisciplinary Teams at Karmanos, said the genetic basis of how smoldering multiple myeloma and multiple myeloma begins is still being researched. Dr. Kin discussed the potential risk factors for smoldering multiple myeloma, the types of testing that are used to monitor the disease, and how it is possible to begin treatment for multiple myeloma in earlier stages if a patient’s smoldering multiple myeloma has progressed to cancer.
