IN THE NEWS: What is POT1 Tumor Predisposition Syndrome in CLL?

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is one of the most common cancers that can be caused by POT1 tumor predisposition syndrome (POT1-TPDS). According to Dipenkumar Modi, M.D., hematologist and medical oncologist, and member of the Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant and Hematology Oncology Multidisciplinary Teams at Karmanos, POT1-TPDS is found in about 5% of patients who have CLL. This is a hereditary mutation, and there is a 50% chance per child that a parent with the mutation can pass it along. Dr. Modi explains a few other cancers POT1-TPDS can cause, some screenings that some patients with the mutation may need, and some advice for patients who know POT1-TPDS runs in their family.
