The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute has been named one of 168 medical centers in the country to which Optum recommends its payers refer their clients for blood and bone marrow transplants.
With more than 3,000 payers using Optum in the U.S., a trusted information and technology-enabled health services business that delivers integrated solutions for health systems, more than 62 million people benefit from its tools. The company’s Centers for Excellence networks recognize “clinically superior providers and offer cost-effective” transplants, among other specialties, including Medicare and Medicaid enrollees.
According to data released, Karmanos’ Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant Program is one of only a select group nationwide reporting some of the best survival outcomes for related and unrelated stem cell transplantation. The program has full accreditation from the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT)—the highest level and most extensive spectrum of accreditation offered by FACT for bone marrow transplant programs. At Karmanos, experts conduct transplants featuring the most advanced medical methods using all sources of stem cells, including autologous (using a patient’s own stem cells), allogeneic (using stem cells from a related or unrelated donor), and cord blood stem cell transplantation for adult and pediatric patients.
Optum and a panel of clinical experts across the country build criteria and evaluate health systems annually to ensure they provide their payer-group clients with health institutions that demonstrate high-quality care and benefits to patients, which include accurate diagnoses, lower costs for the patient, and higher survival rates.
