Hayley Thompson, Ph.D., associate center director of Community Outreach & Education at Karmanos in Detroit, tells Health that the lack of trust Black communities have in the medical system is part of the larger conversation about racial health disparities. Thompson, who has dedicated her career to disparities research, says medical mistrust plays a direct role in continuing these disparities—aka, the starkly different health outcomes of Black people not just when it comes to COVID but conditions from high blood pressure to diabetes to cancer.
