Did you know a Karmanos researcher created a lifesaving treatment for HIV and AIDS? Jerome Horwitz, Ph.D., was a professor at Wayne State University and a researcher at the Michigan Cancer Foundation (now the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute). In 1964, he synthesized an anti-cancer drug. That drug later became the first drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat AIDS. Another drug Dr. Horwitz created in 1967 for cancer was approved 25 years later for treating AIDS. The Detroit Jewish News published a "Looking Back" column about Dr. Horwitz.
