IN THE NEWS: Novel PET radiotracer facilitates early, noninvasive detection of inflammatory bowel disease

Society of Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging

The Society of Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging featured research recently published by Karmanos scientists. Nerissa Viola, Ph.D., leader of the Molecular Imaging Research Program at Karmanos and associate professor at Wayne State University School of Medicine, and several Karmanos researchers and physicians published “Detection of IL12/23p40 via PET visualizes inflammatory bowels disease"  in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine in July 2023. The team discovered that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can be imaged by using positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. IBD includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Both conditions increase a patient’s risk of developing colorectal cancer.
