When cells in the stomach or esophagus lining begin to develop characteristics similar to cells of the small intestine, intestinal metaplasia has begun. This is a precancerous condition that, if not treated, puts patients at a higher risk of esophageal or gastric cancer. Wasif Saif, M.D., MBBS, medical oncologist, co-leader of the Gastrointestinal and Neuroendocrine Oncology Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), and leader of the Phase I Clinical Trials MDT at Karmanos, helped explain the connection of intestinal metaplasia to both cancers and some of the risk factors that lead to this precancerous condition.
