Overview

There are five main types of gynecological cancer:

  • Cervical
  • Ovarian
  • Uterine
  • Vaginal
  • Vulvar

Rarely, cancers can also develop in the fallopian tubes. Uterine (endometrial) cancer is the most common, and ovarian cancer is the deadliest, according to the American Cancer Society. Roughly 60% of patients receive external and/or internal radiation.

Proton Therapy for Gynecologic Cancers

When is proton therapy an option?

McLaren Proton Therapy Center treats all gynecological cancers. Protons deliver high doses of radiation to tumors without impacting surrounding healthy tissue—like the kidneys, bowel, bladder, and pelvic bone marrow—because the beam stops at the tumor rather than exiting the body.

Patients with endometrial or cervical cancer who have had prior radiation, suffer a recurrence, or for whom surgery isn’t an option are also candidates. Adolescents and young adults especially benefit from proton therapy, as it can help avoid long-term side effects such as infertility.

Gynecologic Cancer Facts

Uterine (endometrial) cancer is the most common gynecologic malignancy; ovarian cancer has the highest mortality. According to NIH data, about 60% of patients with these cancers will receive radiation therapy.
