Overview

Head and neck cancers include those of the oral cavity, throat (pharynx), voice box (larynx), paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity, and the salivary glands.

Alcohol and tobacco use are the leading risk factors, and HPV infection is a major driver for oropharyngeal cancers. Head and neck cancers account for nearly 4 % of all U.S. cancers, with about 70,000 new cases annually.

Proton Therapy for Head and Neck Cancers

Why choose proton therapy?

Radiation is commonly used for head and neck cancers, but proximity to the eyes, mouth, and brain can make safe targeting difficult. Protons deliver higher doses directly to the tumor while sparing adjacent healthy tissue.

Up to 60 % of traditional radiation patients require feeding tubes due to oral cavity damage. The precision of proton beams dramatically reduces this risk and other severe side effects.
