Two recent examples highlight how KSP’s expertise and hands-on navigation directly protect patients from financial burden, while strengthening the coordination of care across McLaren.
Case 1: Wiping Out a $5,500 Balance for a Karmanos Bay Region Patient
A patient with commercial insurance, treating chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), faced a $5,500 bill while filling with an external specialty pharmacy. After the prescription was sent to KSP, the team secured access to a manufacturer copay card, reducing the patient’s cost to $0 for future fills at KSP. The KSP team identified and connected the family to available grant funding to offset the balance at the external specialty pharmacy, and provided education and support that the family was not aware of.
Case 2: Lowering a Child’s Medication Cost from $384/Month to $0
A child seen by a non-McLaren physician but covered by McLaren commercial insurance had been paying $384 every month for a specialty medication after assistance was exhausted. When the prescription was received by KSP, the team quickly opted the family out of a maximizer program, reducing the copayment to $50. They then coordinated with McLaren Health Advantage to access internal copayment assistance and successfully reduced the out-of-pocket cost to $0.
