Thoracic Oncology

If you've been diagnosed with a cancer of the chest, including lung cancer, it’s important to be evaluated by experts that focus on these cancers before beginning treatment. We can help.

Karmanos thoracic oncologists are among the best in the world. Team members are national leaders in chest malignancies and recognized experts in the treatment of thoracic cancers among national cooperative groups. The team has been involved in the development of recently approved novel drugs for the treatment of chest cancers and continues to be involved in clinical trials evaluating novel drugs.

Our team devotes time to research investigations including screening and early detection of lung cancer and mesothelioma, detection and treatment intervention in precancerous cells from the sputum of smokers, combined treatments for locally advanced cancers of the chest, clinical trials of combined chemotherapy and radiation therapy, radiation therapy approaches such as intensive modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), gamma knife radiation therapy for brain metastases and studies of novel targeted drugs. They also collaborate with our Phase I Clinical Trials Program.

Additionally, the MONARCH® Robotic Assisted Bronchoscopy Platform gives Karmanos physicians a greater reach, enhanced vision and better control when performing lung biopsies. This technology aims to help physicians overcome the challenges they face when biopsying small, peripheral lung nodules. The MONARCH® Platform’s technology combines the latest advancements in robotic control, small instruments, endoscope design, vision and data science into one platform. For the first time, physicians have both direct vision and software to guide the scope to the small mass.
