IN THE NEWS: How Karmanos Cancer Institute uses AI to find high-risk breast cancer

HIMSSCast

Eric Brown, M.D., FACS, explains the breast cancer risk-assessment program that Karmanos has implemented at the Women’s Wellness Clinic. Dr. Brown is a breast surgeon and the Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Team co-leader. The assessment is given to patients receiving screening mammograms. In return, they and their primary care physician receive information on their individual risk of developing breast, colon and lung cancers. Based on that information, patients may be encouraged to follow up with additional screenings and prevention services and receive prevention care through the high-risk breast cancer program or genetic testing. Dr. Brown explains why it is critical to know this information before a possible cancer diagnosis. Plus, he explains how even though this assessment is given to women, it can help understand the risks of the men in their families when it comes to male breast cancer.
