Bob Marzolf was diagnosed with tongue cancer in 2017 at 49 years old. It was found as he was being intubated for his second hernia surgery. They saw a small area on his tongue. This area concerned the doctor, who did further testing and then referred Marzolf to Syed Naweed Raza, M.D., FRCS(C), FACS, surgical oncologist, plastic and reconstructive surgeon, and member of the Head and Neck Oncology Multidisciplinary Team at Karmanos. Marzolf received a tongue transplant. Dr. Raza used a portion of his arm to complete his tongue. After going through swallow therapy at Karmanos, Marzolf, who said he loves to talk, can pronounce every word. His successful treatment at Karmanos is why he gives to the Head and Neck Cancer Fund.
Marzolf had a great idea to use his talents to support Karmanos. He plays guitar and bass, and his brother plays the same instruments. In 2018, right after Marzolf’s transplant and for his 50th birthday, he decided to have a concert to raise money to support Dr. Raza and his work. He calls this now annual concert Bobstock. He and his brother play, and Marzolf also invites other musicians and bands to perform. Marzolf welcomes around 100 friends, family and neighbors each year to the private concert held in his backyard. His guests donate an amount of their choice. Marzolf said he raises around $4,000 - $5,000 a year. Dr. Raza has attended one of the Bobstock festivals in the past. The 2024 Bobstock concert theme is World Peace.
