Ayman Soubani, MD, Edits New Textbook on Pulmonary Aspergillosis

A Karmanos Cancer Institute physician and Wayne State University (WSU) School of Medicine professor edited a new textbook on pulmonary aspergillosis, a fungus that can lead to severe lung problems.

Ayman Soubani, M.D., pulmonologist, service chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care, member of the Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant and Thoracic Oncology Multidisciplinary Teams (MDTs) at Karmanos, professor of Internal Medicine and chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at WSU, edited “Pulmonary Aspergillosis: A Comprehensive Guide to the Disease Spectrum and Advances in Diagnosis and Management,” recently released by Springer.

“This is a unique book that is dedicated to the spectrum of diseases caused by an interesting fungus called aspergillus. This ubiquitous fungus leads, under certain circumstances related to the patient’s immune system and lung structure, to a variety of conditions that range from serious and fulminating infection to allergic reaction involving the lungs,” Dr. Soubani said.

“There has been recent interest in this organism due to emerging risk factors that lead to severe lung infection. This was highlighted in the recent respiratory viral pandemics, including COVID-19 and influenza. The book discusses in depth the spectrum of pulmonary diseases caused by this fungus and the recent advances in the diagnosis and management of these conditions.”

For the 356-page book, Dr. Soubani recruited experts from around the world to share their knowledge of the diseases caused by fungus.

“At WSU, we have particular expertise in fungal diseases, including pulmonary aspergillosis,” he said. “This textbook provided an opportunity for two of our junior faculty at the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine to author excellent chapters describing important clinical aspects of pulmonary aspergillosis.”

Amina Pervaiz, M.D., pulmonologist and member of the Thoracic Oncology MDT at Karmanos, and assistant professor of Internal Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at WSU, also contributed to the book.

Dr. Soubani also edited “Pulmonary and Critical Care Considerations of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation,” released in 2023.
