Don’t Get Burned! Easy Ways to Protect Your Skin This Summer

Summer is a great time to be outside — whether you're heading to the beach, playing sports, or just hanging out with friends. But with all that sunshine comes the need to protect your skin.

The sun gives off ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can damage your skin even on cloudy days. Too much exposure can cause sunburns, early wrinkles, and increase the risk of skin cancer. Luckily, protecting your skin is easy when you make it part of your daily routine.

Here are some smart and simple ways to stay safe in the sun, recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology Association:

  • Use sunscreen every day. Choose one that’s SPF 30 or higher and says “broad-spectrum” on the label. Put it on 15 minutes before going outside, and don’t forget easy-to-miss spots like your ears, neck, and the tops of your feet. Reapply every two hours—or sooner if you’re swimming or sweating.

  • Cover up. Long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses help block UV rays. Light-colored clothing works best because it reflects sunlight.

  • Stay in the shade. Try to avoid direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun is at its strongest.

  • Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water keeps your skin healthy, especially on hot days.

  • Avoid tanning beds. They can be just as harmful as the sun and aren’t a safe way to get a tan.

Your skin does a lot to protect you — so it’s important to return the favor. By following these steps, you can enjoy the summer while keeping your skin safe and healthy.
