Did you know that a cancer clinical trial is a research study that examines new cancer-fighting drugs, surgical methods, diagnostic tests, or methods for disease prevention? Clinical trials lead to new treatment methods, but this is only possible if patients participate in these studies.
As an academic center and research institute, the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute offers one of the most robust clinical trial portfolios in the country. However, the mention of clinical trials often has an adverse reaction due to misunderstanding.
Karmanos’ Office of Community Outreach and Engagement has produced a video designed to educate the community about the importance of clinical trials in cancer care. In just 10 minutes, hearing firsthand experiences from cancer patients enrolled in a clinical trial, as well as insights from leading experts at Karmanos, participants will gain a clear understanding of the benefits of clinical trials and the rights of patients when participating in these studies. After completing the video, participants should understand why cancer clinical trials are important for improving the standard of care for patients undergoing treatment now and those who may be diagnosed with cancer in the future.
Participants will have the option to view the video as part of an optional research study. They’ll be prompted to fill out a brief pre-test and will complete a brief post-test after viewing the video. Those who are not interested in participating in the research study can still watch the video using the same link.
