Many oncolytic viral therapy studies are being conducted, including some at Karmanos. Oncolytic viruses kill cancer cells while boosting immune response. Anthony Shields, M.D., Ph.D., medical oncologist and member of the Gastrointestinal and Neuroendocrine Oncology and the Phase 1 Clinical Trials Multidisciplinary Teams, described how these therapies are used, possible side effects, and the ongoing investigations with oncolytic viral therapies, including one study that he and his colleagues presented at a recent conference in January 2024.
