Kristen Moerchen, RN, a dedicated Karmanos nurse since 2022, was recently honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. This program recognizes and celebrates nurses who go above and beyond for their patients and their loved ones.
“I was so honored to have received this award,” said Moerchen. “I feel so grateful to have been recognized and noticed for my dedication and consistent efforts to provide the best care possible for each and every patient. Patients are in their most vulnerable states when at the hospital or starting treatment for the first time, and being able to comfort, listen, reassure, and provide them with knowledge that empowers them fulfills me.”
Moerchen credits much of her passion and success to her incredible Karmanos teammates, who motivate her to continue improving patient outcomes every day. They all share the same goal, and she is grateful to be part of such a supportive and driven group of individuals.
“This award reflects not only my hard work but also the incredible team I work with daily,” said Moerchen. “It reminds me of the importance of every small act of kindness and dedication, and how they can truly make a difference in someone's healing journey.”
Moerchen also reflected on the influence of her family on her nursing career, especially her mother, who chose to dedicate her career to nursing as well.
“My parents have been my greatest role models and continue to inspire me every day. They’ve always taught me the importance of hard work, empathy, active listening, and kindness — values that have shaped both my personal and professional life,” said Moerchen.
The DAISY Award, established by the DAISY Foundation, is awarded to nurses who display an exemplary standard of care and are dedicated to their patients. The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation, based in California, was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes to honor his memory. Barnes died at the age of 33 due to complications from idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), an autoimmune disease. Barnes and his family received outstanding care from nurses while he was ill, and they felt inspired by them.
