Information from Karmanos on COVID-19 booster vaccines

Over the past 17 months, Karmanos Cancer Institute has worked tirelessly to ensure that our patients and staff are informed about changes to care in response to COVID-19. We are providing the following to help you understand the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) latest statements. To view the complete statements, click here.

The CDC now recommends a third shot of the COVID-19 vaccine for people who are moderately to severely immunocompromised. Some cancer patients may fit into this category. Since each patient is different, Karmanos encourages you to contact your physician to determine whether you should receive a third dose of the vaccine.

The recommendation for a booster shot applies only to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. There is not enough data at this time to determine whether immunocompromised people who received the Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 vaccine also have an improved antibody response following an additional dose of the same vaccine.

At this time, COVID-19 vaccines, including booster doses are not offered at Karmanos Cancer Institute. If you speak with your physician and they recommend that you receive your first vaccine dose or the third booster, please contact your local health department or community pharmacy.
