Gynecologic Oncology at Karmanos Cancer Institute

The Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Flint is expanding to fulfill the increasing need for oncology services in Genesee County with the addition of four highly respected Karmanos Cancer Institute physicians. Robert Morris, M.D.; Radhika P. Gogoi, M.D., Ph.D..; John J. Wallbillich, M.D.; and Ira S. Winer, M.D., Ph.D. are joining the comprehensive cancer care team at Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Flint to bring advanced care for cancers of the female reproductive system to the community.

“We are excited to expand our gynecologic oncology practice, bringing this specialized cancer care closer to residents in and surrounding Genesee County,” said Dr. Morris. “Taking away the need for patients to have to travel and bringing the cancer services that we provide to the patients in Flint allows us to extend certain surgical techniques and treatments that are otherwise only offered outside Genesee County. Patients can receive cancer care based on research and clinical trials, continue their treatment plan tailored to them by a robust team of cancer physicians, and receive follow-up care right here in Flint.”

All four physicians have training in obstetrics and gynecology, with specializations in surgical oncology and medical management of gynecologic cancers where indicated. Drs. Morris, Gogoi, Wallbillich and Winer specialize in the removal of cancerous tumors located within or near the female reproductive organs, including cervical cancer, fallopian tube cancer, gestational trophoblastic disease, ovarian cancer, primary peritoneal cancer, uterine (endometrial) cancer, vaginal cancer, and vulvar cancer. They even specialize in the removal of these cancers with minimally invasive techniques. Each are fellowship-trained, currently teach at Wayne State University in the areas of oncology and gynecologic oncology, and lead multiple clinical trials and research studies through Karmanos. Furthermore, they direct chemotherapy management and participate in cutting edge clinical trials.

All four gynecologic oncologists participate in Karmanos’ Gynecologic Oncology Multidisciplinary Team, which is led by Dr. Morris. This team also consists of radiation and medical oncologists, as well as specialized nurses, pathologists, radiologists, and additional specialists involved in the care of a cancer patient. Drs. Morris, Gogoi, Wallbillich and Winer will work closely with the medical and radiation oncologists at the Karmanos location in Flint.

“The addition of four of the top gynecologic oncology researchers and clinicians in the country really helps give Flint-area patients the best care they can receive within the state,” said Chris Candela, president and CEO of McLaren Flint. “We look forward to seeing many more patient success stories as we tackle an important medical need in our county and beyond.”
