Karmanos’ Radiation Oncology Services receives reaccreditation by the American College of Radiology

The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit and Farmington Hills has been re-accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) for Radiation Oncology Services. The current accreditation period is good through June 30, 2020. The program was first accredited in 2014 and is typically a three-year cycle. The ACR program provides an evaluation of patient care by a third-party; an impartial peer review of Karmanos’ operations, personnel, equipment, treatment planning, patient electronic medical records, department policies; and an assessment of overall quality. These measures are based on nationally recognized standards, including the American Association of Physics in Medicine (AAPM) technical standards, and AAPM Task Group reports. The accreditation process is designed to promote quality and is educational in nature. It includes an on-site survey performed by an ACR radiation oncologist and medical physicist.

“Detroit and Farmington Hills have undergone a rigorous review process and we are proud to have formal recognition that we meet and in most cases exceed nationally-accepted standards and safety guidelines,” said Mara Jelich, director of Radiation Oncology and Imaging at Karmanos. “As always, all personnel at both sites worked as a solid team and represented our departments with great expertise and professionalism. This is truly a team effort and the radiation oncology center family is committed to exceeding standards of quality, along with delivering a personal touch to each and every patient.” The ACR, founded in 1924, is one of the largest and most influential medical associations in the United States. The ACR devotes its resources to making imaging and radiation therapy safe, effective and accessible to those who need it. Its members include radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, interventional radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians. We congratulate the radiation oncology teams at Detroit and Farmington Hills for receiving ACR reaccreditation!
