Lisa Chism, DNP, APRN, NCMP, FAANP, clinical director of the Women's Wellness Clinic at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, has been appointed by the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the director of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to the Federal Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer in Young Women (ACBCYW).
The Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer in Young Women provides advice and guidance to the secretary, HHS, the assistant secretary HHS and the director, CDC, regarding the formative research, development, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based activities designed to prevent breast cancer (particularly among those at heightened risk). They also promote the early cancer detection and support of young women who develop the disease. The advice provided by the committee will assist in ensuring scientific quality, timeliness, utility and dissemination of credible appropriate messages and resource materials.
The ACBCYW was established as part of the Education and Awareness Requires Learning Young (EARLY) Act. The EARLY Act authorizes the CDC to develop initiatives to increase knowledge of breast health and breast cancer among women, particularly among those under the age of 40 and those at heightened risk for developing the disease.
