Karmanos gives you Your Best Chance.

A diagnosis isn’t the end of your story; it’s the beginning of a new chapter. And the direction it takes is a responsibility we share, together. At the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, we have all the resources, from groundbreaking research to the most up-to-date therapies and individualized treatment plans, to give you your best chance forward.

Cancer specialists who are focused on your particular cancer

Karmanos offers 15 multidisciplinary teams; each designed and staffed specifically to ensure that patients and their families get their cancer diagnosis and treatment right the first time. Each team consists of cancer specialists who are focused on your particular cancer and who have devoted their careers to fighting the very cancer with which you are confronted.

Our team members include specialists from each discipline including, diagnostic, medical and surgical oncology, radiation oncology; pathology; radiology; oncology nursing; supportive care; and, when appropriate, genetics.

Committed to delivering the best care

Karmanos’ multidisciplinary teams thrive on collaboration and share a passion to reduce time, eliminate doubt among our patients and deliver award-winning care.

The entire team reviews the diagnostic information and speaks directly with the physician who first examined you so that they can make a recommendation for your care that reflects the latest thinking from all of the various specialties.

Our cancer doctors, whether they’re based in Detroit or any of our locations throughout the communities we serve, have met rigorous criteria to become certified as Karmanos providers. This assures patients and their families that they will receive the very best care from Karmanos treatment facilities.

Advancing Cancer Care

Karmanos Cancer Institute is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center in metro Detroit and one of just 51 centers of its kind in the United States. That means patients can access treatments exclusive to Karmanos as well as clinical trials, cancer prevention programs and multidisciplinary teams of cancer specialists — a comprehensive approach you cannot find at a community hospital. Because comprehensive cancer centers are at the forefront of cancer research, they can often handle patient cases that are more complex.

Offering tomorrow's standards of care today

Karmanos offers more cancer treatments often not found elsewhere in Michigan. Many of the latest cancer-fighting medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration were available to our patients first

To receive the NCI designation, a hospital must demonstrate expertise in research, laboratory, clinical and population-based research. Hospitals must also provide early-phase clinical trials and conduct community outreach and educational activities. Karmanos is conducting more than 800 cancer-specific scientific investigation programs and clinical trials.

The scientific advances Karmanos researchers make every day help determine treatment options and guide treatment courses. We’re at the forefront of offering treatments that define the new standards of care. Our research programs, which are unique to Karmanos, are bringing safe, effective and groundbreaking treatments from the laboratory bench to the patient’s bedside.

Leading the fight against cancer

At Karmanos, we’re doing things to fight cancer that didn’t exist as far back as yesterday. While every hospital will do all that they can, we can do things other hospitals just can’t.

Support that provides strength

To support medical treatments, integrative therapies are used to treat the whole patient — mind, body and soul. Karmanos offers a wide variety of educational, spiritual, palliative care and nutrition resources to provide the extra care and support patients and their families need to have a successful journey through cancer. In addition, every journey begins with the assignment of an oncology patient navigator. These navigators help patients through every step of their cancer care. They can be a single point of contact between the patient and medical team.

Your Best Chance to beat cancer

Karmanos Cancer Institute is the only hospital in Michigan focused solely on cancer. That means we’re completely devoted to offering every patient the best treatment options. The breadth and depth of our knowledge, experience and individual expertise, coupled with our multidisciplinary team approach, makes Karmanos uniquely qualified to offer every patient the best chance for a successful outcome, and more precious time spent with loved ones, family and friends.
