Detroit FutureHealers: Empowering the Next Generation of Medical Professionals

Welcome to Detroit FutureHealers, a high school biomedical education program dedicated to inspiring and preparing students for careers in science and medicine. Originally launched as FocuSStem NextGen in 2019, this program represents Karmanos Cancer Institute's commitment to nurturing the next generation of medical professionals through hands-on experiences and early exposure to biomedical research.

    Our Mission

Detroit FutureHealers is committed to empowering underrepresented youth by providing them with hands-on STEM experiences in oncology. By showcasing the diverse career paths available within the biomedical field, we aim to inspire and prepare the next generation of medical professionals.

    About the Program

Detroit FutureHealers offers a unique half-day field trip experience designed for groups of high school students. This program provides an immersive opportunity to explore the biomedical field, specifically focusing on cancer research and clinical care at the Karmanos Cancer Center. Karmanos is one of only two NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in Michigan, highlighting its role as a leader in cancer treatment and research.

    Field Trip Highlights

    • Biomedical Cancer Research Labs: Students will tour cutting-edge laboratories where groundbreaking cancer research is conducted.
    • Radiation Oncology Centers: A guided tour through our radiation oncology centers educates students on how advanced technology is used in cancer treatment.
    • Clinical Care Environments: Students will gain insight into the clinical aspects of cancer care and understand the different disciplines involved in it.

    Career Pathway Speakers

During the visit, a series of faculty and professionals from Karmanos Cancer Institute will conduct presentations and, later, open the floor to questions from the students. These professionals will share their educational journeys, day-to-day work experiences, and what inspired them to pursue their current roles. This direct interaction aims to help underrepresented students see themselves in these spaces and learn about the many disciplines involved in supporting cancer research and clinical treatment.

    Fields of Study

Students will learn about various fields within the biomedical and cancer care sectors, including:

    • Radiation Oncology and Medical Physics
    • Genetic Counseling
    • Population Sciences
    • Oncology Nursing
    • Molecular Imaging and Biomarkers
    • Basic Sciences in Cancer Research
