A Second Opinion Could Be Your Best Chance

When it comes to cancer care, confidence in a treatment plan is essential. A second opinion can help patients feel informed, assured and empowered about their next steps.

Seeking another expert’s perspective isn't about doubting a doctor, it’s about ensuring every option and resource is presented. A second opinion can confirm a diagnosis, offer alternative treatment options or simply provide peace of mind.

At Karmanos, our specialists are here to work alongside our patients and caregivers and eliminate any doubts about the care journey. We’re here to make the process simple and respectful.

3 Steps to a Second Opinion

  1. Contact Us

Call 1-800-KARMANOS or submit an online appointment request. An oncology navigator will contact you within 24–48 hours to start the process and handle the details so you can focus on getting the answers you need.

  2. Speak with Our Oncology Nurse

You’ll receive a follow-up call from an oncology nurse practitioner to review your medical history. Based on your diagnosis, you’ll be matched with the specialist best suited to your needs.

  3. Meet Your Specialist Within 7 Days

Your appointment will be with a cancer expert already familiar with your case, ready to provide personalized guidance and recommendations within 7 days of your first contact.

How to Talk to Your Doctor About Getting a Second Opinion

We understand that talking to a doctor about a second opinion can feel awkward, but most doctors understand and support your desire to feel confident in your care. Here are a few questions you could ask:

  • “I’ve heard it’s common to get a second opinion – how can I go about getting one to understand all of my options?”
  • “This is a lot to process, and understanding my options is important to me. Is there another specialist you can refer me to?”

Your doctor's goal, just like yours, is the best possible outcome. Seeking another opinion shows you're engaged and invested in your health.
