If you or someone close to you is a patient at the Karmanos Cancer Institute, we encourage you to visit the Education and Resource Center to get information that will help you:

  • Understand the diagnosis and possible treatment options
  • Make informed treatment decisions
  • Effectively communicate with the health care team
  • Know what to expect before, during and after treatment

Pre-Treatment Chemotherapy Orientation

  • Tuesdays from 11 a.m. - Noon
  • Thursdays from 3 - 4 p.m.
  • View the class flyer here.

Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy typically have many questions. Well-informed patients respond more positively to treatments and are less apprehensive about the process.

We welcome and encourage you to attend the Karmanos Cancer Institute Pre-Treatment Chemotherapy Orientation. We provide answers to questions you may have about chemotherapy, what to bring with you to your treatment appointments and who to contact in case of an emergency. This 90-minute educational session is free to Karmanos patients and their caregivers.

If you are unable to come to a scheduled class, use the links below to obtain the class material. If you have questions or concerns, call one of our Patient Educators at 313-576-9288.

Catheter Care Orientation

  • Wednesdays from 3-4:30 p.m.

This class is provides patients and their caregivers with an understanding of how the catheter will be, placed, used and how to care for it. Infection control practices are taught. The interactive class provides demonstration of all techniques and allows participants to practice sterile dressing change and safe practices for proper maintenance of the catheter.

Breast Reconstruction

Before undergoing breast reconstruction surgery, it is important to have the knowledge needed to make informed and educated decisions. The 12 minute video “Breast Reconstruction Animation" and Breast Reconstruction Fact Sheet linked below will provide you with some of the information you will need during your consultation with the plastic surgeon. Please view the video, read the fact sheet and write down any questions you have as preparation for this discussion.
