Visitor Policy at Karmanos Cancer Institute

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Restricted Visitor Information - ALL Karmanos locations

To protect the health of our communities and as a safety precaution to prevent the risk of spreading COVID-19, Karmanos Cancer Institute is continuing visitor restrictions.

Effective Saturday, April 10, 2021, Karmanos Cancer Center prohibits any visitors that are not necessary for medical care, including family members, spouses and children, regardless of vaccination status.

One support person per 24 hour-period may be allowed in the following exceptions:

  • Legal guardianship and activated power of attorney or court-appointed guardianship.
  • Hospitalized minors less than 18 years old may have one parent remain with the child.
  • In rare situations, a support person may be present at the time of patient discharge for complex discharge teaching.
  • A person having surgery may have one support person accompany them to the pre-operative area. Once the patient is in the operating room, the support person will wait in a designated COVID-19 safe area. When the surgery is completed, the physician will update the support person and they must leave the hospital. A support person may not access the inpatient units after surgery.
  • Critical care patients may have one support person from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Only one support person is permitted per day.
  • Actively dying patients may have two support people at the bedside within a 24-hour period.
  • Other extreme circumstances may be approved by hospital leadership.

Approved support people must remain the same for 24 hours and cannot exchange places with others. Those approved to enter the Karmanos Cancer Center will be:

  • Screened for COVID-19 symptoms, including fever and respiratory infections. If symptomatic, the support person will not be allowed to enter any hospital area including clinics or procedural areas.
  • Expected to wear a facemask while in the hospital.
  • Expected to stay at the patient's bedside and not wander.
  • Expected to sanitize/wash hands every time they enter or leave the patient's room.
  • Expected to leave immediately when visitation is over, and not wander through hallways.

Hospitalized patients who test positive for COVID-19 or patients suspected of having COVID-19 are not allowed visitors. Visitors for this population of patients cannot enter into the facility.

We understand the critical role of loved ones during this time and encourage patients to use our free Wi-Fi to communicate with family members and friends through a mobile device, tablet or laptop.

Our commitment to health and safety remains the highest priority. We continue to monitor the risk of COVID-19 closely and will adjust visitor restrictions as necessary. We appreciate your help in keeping our patients and employees safe.
