Visitor Policy at Karmanos Cancer Institute

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Restricted Visitor Information - ALL Karmanos locations

To protect the health of our communities and as a safety precaution to prevent the risk of spreading COVID-19, Karmanos Cancer Institute is continuing visitor restrictions.

Effective Tuesday, September 13, 2022, Karmanos Cancer Center is implementing the following visitation guidelines.

Please note that all visitors or support persons must be 18 years or older and MUST wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) during the entire visit.

Outpatient Clinics

  • Patients in ambulatory clinics may have one healthy adult caregiver present.
  • Pediatric patients under the age of 18 may have one healthy adult caregiver (e.g., parents or legal guardians) accompany the patient in the ambulatory setting, including the testing areas.
  • Other extreme circumstances may be approved by hospital leadership.

Inpatient Units

  • Visitation hours are from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. daily.
  • Hospitalized patients are allowed two healthy adult visitors per day. Only two visitors are permitted to visit within a 24-hour period.
  • Patients undergoing a surgical procedure that extends beyond visitation hours (8 a.m. – 6 p.m.) will be allowed two visitors for two hours upon return to the inpatient unit.
  • Pediatric patients under the age of 18 may have two healthy adult visitors (e.g., parent or legal guardian) remain with the patient during their hospitalization.
  • Intensive Care Unit patients may have two healthy adult visitors within a 24-hour period at the bedside. Only two visitors are permitted within a 24-hour period.
  • Actively dying patients may have up to four healthy visitors within a 24-hour period at the bedside.
  • Hospitalized patients who test positive for COVID-19 or patients suspected of having COVID-19 are not allowed visitors. Visitors for this population of patients cannot enter a Karmanos facility unless the patient is actively dying.

Please be aware that with rapidly changing COVID-19 activity in our state, these guidelines are subject to change.

Visitor Guidelines and Screening Requirements

Approved support people must remain the same for 24 hours and cannot exchange places with others. Those approved to enter the Karmanos Cancer Center will be:

  • Screened for COVID-19 symptoms, including fever and respiratory infections. If symptomatic, the individual will not be allowed to enter any hospital area, including clinics or procedural areas.
  • Expected to wear a mask. All individuals entering Karmanos’ treatment facilities must wear a mask regardless of vaccination status. This includes consistent facemask use by the patient’s visitor while in a patient room or clinic room.
  • Expected to socially distance, as able from others, including in waiting areas.
  • Expected to stay with the patient and not wander. All caregivers and visitors should remain with the patient except for quick trips to the restroom.
  • Expected to refrain from eating, drinking or sharing the patient's restroom.
  • Expected to sanitize/wash hands every time they enter or leave the patient's room.
  • Expected to leave immediately when the appointment/visitation is over and not wander through hallways.
Delivery Policy

For the protection of our patients, we kindly ask you to not send flowers, food or other items that must be delivered.

Pharmacy Services - Detroit

The Karmanos Ambulatory Pharmacy in Detroit will remain open. Patients filling clinic or discharge prescriptions may visit the Pharmacy as usual. Patients needing refills may request to have their prescriptions mailed by calling 1-800-KARMANOS (1-800-527-6266), Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Valet Services - Detroit

Valet services at Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit is temporarily unavailable.

During this time, parking for Karmanos patients is available in our valet lot and the North Deck parking garage, located at John R and Canfield. Patients can be assured that they will be assisted from the car and throughout their visit.
