Visitor Policy at Karmanos Cancer Institute

McLaren Health Care and Karmanos Cancer Center continually monitor the guidance from federal and state authorities with respect to keeping us all safe and protected from COVID-19.

Masking Guidance

  • In Hospital or Clinical Setting where patient care is provided
    • The CDC and CMS are recommending that those health care employees who have received an exemption from the COVID-19 vaccine requirement should wear a NIOSH-approved N95 or equivalent or higher-level respirator for source control, regardless of whether they are providing direct patient care to or otherwise interacting with patients.
  • Karmanos Masking Guidance in non-patient care areas
  • Masks are encouraged in non-patient care areas if 6 feet distance cannot be maintained.
  • Those with chronic illnesses or who are immunocompromised are at higher risk for poor outcomes from COVID-19 and would benefit most from masking in indoor settings. These risk factors may include age, medical conditions, and vaccination status.

Karmanos Visitor Guidelines

  • Please note that all visitors or support persons must be 12 years or older and MUST wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) during the entire visit.
  • Patients with Suspected/Confirmed COVID-19
    • Patients admitted with COVID-19 may have two healthy visitors per day.
    • Visitors are required to wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth at all times. Visitors will also be provided additional PPE to wear at their discretion (N-95, gown, eye protection, and gloves).
  • Outpatient Clinics
    • Patients in ambulatory clinics may have one healthy caregiver present.
    • Pediatric patients under the age of 18 may have one healthy caregiver (e.g., parents or legal guardians) accompany the patient in the ambulatory setting, including the testing areas.
    • Other extreme circumstances may be approved by hospital leadership.
  • Inpatient Units
    • Visitation hours are from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. daily.
    • Hospitalized patients are allowed two healthy visitors per day. Only two visitors are permitted to visit within a 24-hour period.
    • Patients undergoing a surgical procedure that extends beyond visitation hours (8 a.m. – 8 p.m.) will be allowed two visitors for two hours upon return to the inpatient unit.
    • Pediatric patients under the age of 18 may have two healthy visitors (e.g., parent or legal guardian) remain with the patient during their hospitalization.
    • Intensive Care Unit patients may have two healthy visitors within a 24-hour period at the bedside. Only two visitors are permitted within a 24-hour period.
    • Actively dying patients may have up to four healthy visitors within a 24-hour period at the bedside.
