K-RAISE Medical Student Research & Mentorship Program
Overview
The Karmanos Research & Academic Immersion for Student Education (K-RAISE) program provides 3rd- and 4th-year medical students with structured research exposure and mentorship in oncology. Scholars join a semi-annual cohort, participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards, and work with faculty mentors on clinical or translational research projects. Each student completes a poster presentation and engages in professional development activities.
Eligibility
- 3rd or 4th year medical students.
- Strong interest in oncology and research.
- Ability to commit to the 12 month program requirements.
Scholar Expectations
K-RAISE scholars are expected to actively participate in all program components. This includes attending at least one multidisciplinary tumor board meeting each month and working closely with a faculty mentor to develop an Individual Development Plan and a research project. Scholars will complete a research poster and present it at the K-RAISE Capstone Session, with the option to submit a manuscript.
They will also join monthly journal clubs with oncology fellows, attend institutional didactics and one MDT symposium, and take part in professional development workshops focused on career growth, research design, and abstract writing. In addition, scholars will engage in outreach activities such as mentoring undergraduates or presenting to high school students, while maintaining consistent communication with mentors and program leaders throughout the program.
